We are still not very comfortable with the phrase, “documents and contracts”. General people are actually quite afraid of this phrase as documents and contracts have got strong legal connotations and common man prefers to keep himself away from all kinds of legal matters. Documents and contracts refer to some complicated legal written matters. But, we have to deal with documents and contracts in some form or the other in our daily lives even though we try our bests to avoid all these complicated legal versions of simple matters.

Documents and contracts can be of various types. There are business documents and contracts, legal documents and contracts, historical documents and contracts and even geographical documents and contracts. A businessman cannot do without business documents and contracts and an archaeologist would surely be badly in need of some valid historical documents to carry out his research. And, common people are always in need of legal documents and contracts. If you want to rent a house, you have to enter into a legal agreement with the person you are renting. You might be interested in starting a new business and for that you need a business license. License is again a forma of legal document. The documents and contracts specify lots of things ranging from the terms and conditions of the agreement to the consequences of violating any one of the clauses mentioned in the signed agreement or from specifying the duration of the term to the remuneration schemes or transaction mode.
Documents can be anything that is written or printed but contracts have got some legal connotations. You cannot violate the clauses of a contract once it is signed. Violation is definitely an unlawful act and this is known as “breach of contract”. Historical documents are mainly about the accounts of battles. Unfortunately, we do not get detail information on the lifestyle of the common people of a particular age from these historical documents. And, archaeologists and anthropologists look forward to such details. Most of the historical documents are the versions of the rulers and so, we do not get an impartial picture of the then society from these documents. Historical contracts are the treaties signed either to end a war or to legalize the transfer of power from one hand to another.
Business contracts, on the other hand are invoices and receipts to support purchases, expenses, property dealings, employment taxes, travel, entertainment and gift expenses.
Some people identify the phrase,” documents and contracts” with legal documents and contracts. Legal documents and contracts can further be classified into various sub categories like Constitution, licenses, Golden Bulls, sureties and writs. Gone are those days when people used to nurture a faith in verbal contracts. Today, contracts refer to signed and legally valid contracts. Interestingly, the party who is dictating the clauses of the contract remains in the advantageous position throughout the term of the agreement. Thus, a contract can be defined as a written agreement of certain exchange that is signed between two or more people.
